Now that it’s getting colder, it’s time to prepare ourselves for the upcoming winter season! It’s easy to lose motivation to stay active when it gets cold outside.
We shouldn’t forget that staying active, especially during winter time makes a huge difference in our health! Most of us catch a cold at least once or twice during winter time.
To decrease the risk of getting sick this winter, there are a few things that can help your immune system.
Here are my favourite ways to make sure that I stay active and healthy through the colder months!
What you can do to stay healthy and fit
Get out in the sun
One of the many benefits that come with having a dog, is that you always have to get outside no matter if it’s sunny, rainy or snowy.
Most dogs get frustrated when they don’t get enough exercise so we don’t get a choice when it comes to going for walks!
Sometimes it can be annoying but getting enough fresh air and sunshine can boost your immune system. Going for walks always improves my mood! 🙂
Also, a power walk is a great option, if you want to work out in nature!
Move your body
I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times before and because it’s really that important, I’m going to say it again!
Try to get at least 2-3 workouts in per week to make sure that you’re sweating out all the bad stuff! I like to do one 45 min workout, one 30 min workout and one 10 min high-intensity interval workout per week.
In addition, I like to go for at least one 30-45 minute run per week. You just need to find what works best for you. You can’t motivate yourself to stick to your workout plan? Don’t worry, I have some tips for you!
Eat more greens
Nutrition makes such a big difference when it comes to staying healthy. Vegetables and fruits contain lots of vitamins and fibre that help to keep our bodies healthy!
Get good sleep
The most important thing to me when it comes to not getting sick is getting a good night’s sleep! How much sleep on average do you get per night? 5 hours? 6 hours?
You can do better! Try and get at least 7-9 hours per night. While you’re asleep your body does magical things. It repairs itself and helps you feel good when you wake up!
If you don’t feel like your quality of sleep isn’t that great, maybe it’s time for a new mattress or pillow? Or maybe you need a good night routine that helps you sleep better?
Take Supplements if you’re deficient
It might be a good idea to see a doctor and get your blood checked. Deficiencies could be the reason why you get sick all the time.
Especially if your diet isn’t on point, you might not get all the nutrients that your body needs to maintain a healthy and working immune system!
Don’t stress about little things
I think we can agree that stress makes everything worse. When you feel stressed, your body releases cortisol which weakens your immune system*!
I like to meditate before I go to sleep, do yoga and read books to wind down after a stressful day. Check out my easy self-care ideas if you need some inspiration!
There’s also this great book that I read last year, it’s called ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff – and it’s all small stuff’. It taught me how to let go little things that would annoy most people.
If you want to live a more balanced and happier life, this book is perfect for you!
Don’t spread the germs
When you’re at work or school you touch many surfaces that are full of bacteria and germs that you don’t want in your body! (Of course, some of those are completely harmless but others can really make us sick.)
Make sure to clean your phone, laptop or computer on a regular basis. I also keep disinfectant wipes in my car.
I know, washing your hands is such a no-brainer but common sense isn’t always common practice! We tend to forget that we touch a million things every day that could make us sick. 😀
Wear the right clothes
I remember when I was younger, I would rather be cold if it meant I could wear that super cute outfit I loved. Today, I think that’s such a silly thing to do!
When it’s cold outside, you have to wear clothes that protect your body. Especially when you do your workouts outside, make sure that you wear appropriate workout clothes!
Don’t do it for the “Summer Body”
You don’t need to work out for a “summer body”! Your body will always be your body, no matter if it’s summer, spring or winter.
You only have one body and you should always treat it right – not just because you want to look good when it’s time to wear bikinis again. I recently wrote a post about how you can learn to love your body again!
Exercise is a celebration of what you body can do – not a punishment for what you ate.
I hope these tips will help you stay healthy and fit this upcoming winter season!
